Municipal Public Library of the Albaycin


The Municipal Public Library of the Albaycin is a Cultural Centre at the service of the district with the following main objectives:

• To promote and preserve the interest and liking for reading
• To promote spending free time in a constructive way
• To assist cultural spreading and continuous training by promoting reading and other activities such as conferences, round tables, exhibitions, reading guides, etc.
• To provide information from all the domains of knowledge, using the document collection of the library, which includes reference works, press, magazines, etc.
• To work together with other cultural, leisure and social centres in the district.
• To guarantee the access of the immigrant population and the ethnical, linguistic and cultural minorities to the Library of the Albaycin.
• The promotion of the library as a place for meeting and for cultural exchange is the way to assure that those minorities have access to the library in the same conditions as the rest of the district neighbours.
• To raise public awareness on the positive values of multiculturalism, trying to avoid any form of racism and xenophobia.

To meet all these objectives, the Library of the Albaycin is equipped with two free access lounges, one for children and the other one for adults, where the following documents may be found:

• Books for new readers
• A collection for children/ young people
• A reference collection, with reference material, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, yearbooks, etc.
• A collection with the main topics and authors related to Granada
• The general collection, including all the domains of knowledge Periodical publications (press, magazines, etc.)
• Ethnical music, especially Arabic, with more than one hundred titles A collection in Arabic, including all topics, especially cultural and linguistic topics. There exists a great collection of books for children/ young people and modern Arabic fiction, as well as more than five hundred books in Spanish, Arabic and French.

The library of the Albaycin is especially dedicated to the promotion of culture and continuous training by means of reading and other cultural activities, fostering the social and cultural integration of all the district population.

• Visits for students and adults so that they become familiar with the library and its services.
• Video-forum: projection of films and debates about the literature that gave origin to them Participation in district celebrations
• Workshops of painting, picture and other activities Christmas tales competition
• Hours dedicated to tale telling, staging and other activities for children
• Literary itineraries and other activities for adults.

The Library of Albaycin is provided with a system of signs that identify the different rooms and services that conform it, so that access is easier for every person, regardless of their origin or language. There also exists public free access to the Internet, where this site may be found: Andalucía Entreculturas. This web site has information resources for ethnical, cultural and linguistic minorities in Andalusia. Its home delivery loan service is free, although it is necessary to have a reader's card previously. The books that are part of the library's collection may be borrowed for 15 days, except for the reference material and the periodical publications.
