Our history

The Library was created following the confiscation of 1835 to receive the funds from the convents. At first it was installed in the Institute of Secondary Education. By Royal Order of August 7, 1895, it was served by the Faculty, with its first director being Mr. Lope Barrón y Ochoa (1895-1918), who was succeeded by the Malaga¿s ¿Poeta de la Raza¿, Mr. Salvador Rueda Santos (1919-1924). In 1933 a second stage of the Library began, when it moved to an independent, centrally located premises ¿ a rented flat in the Alameda ¿ and took the name of ¿Ricardo de Orueta Popular Library¿, another illustrious Malaga citizen, who, by that time, was the Director General of Fine Arts. Later, in 1937, it changed its name again to ¿Cervantes Public Library¿.

In a report written in 1939, the author describes the deplorable conditions in which the library is located, as well as the fact that, since 1934, the funds from the confiscation have been packaged to be sent to the Alcalá de Henares Deposit Library. On April 29, 1956, the Casa de Cultura was inaugurated, where, together with the Provincial Historical Archive, the Library was installed, in which the 8000 volumes, at least partially, from the old convents are integrated.

At the end of 1994, the Library was moved to a provisional building, duly conditioned by the Andalusian Regional Government, to which, by Royal Decree 864/1984, of February 29 (BOE 11/05/1984), the management of the Library was transferred (Management Agreement, according to Resolution of October 18, 1984 [BOE 18/01/1984]). The old Casa de Cultura was demolished to recover the Roman Theatre, discovered when it was build.

The new provisional location has forced new approaches in terms of facilities, distribution of services, timetables, number, and distribution of staff, etc. Photo of the current building of the BPE ¿ BP of Malaga in the Avenida de Europa.
